ADA compliance is a set of regulations to ensure that products and services meet certain safety and security standards. Businesses that sell or create products or services that the federal government may use must comply with the ADA. Many companies like accessiBe have sprung up to assist businesses with ADA compliance.

What Are the Requirements for ADA Compliance?

There are several ADA Standards, and the goal is to make everything accessible for all types of people.

The three guiding principles of ADA compliance include:

  • Relative to buildings and facilities – Buildings and facilities must be built or altered with consideration for everyone regardless of age, gender, race, etc.
  • Relative to programs, activities, and services offered to the public – Public programs, activities, and services must be accessible to all people. Other aspects of governing should also be considered when making changes or improvements.
  • Relative to employment – Employers cannot discriminate against qualified workers with disabilities. The employer must consider different types of disabilities, just as there are different abilities.

The following are the four main ADA design, construction, and program requirements:

  1. Accessible Routes – Businesses must have marked accessible paths from parking areas to the building entrance. This includes sidewalks, curb cuts, and ramps for wheelchair accessibility. If there is a change of floor levels in a structure, this must be addressed.
  2. Accessible Entrances – Every entrance to a building must be accessible, which means the door must be wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs and carts, etc. The threshold should not exceed 1/4 inch, or it will pose problems for people who use wheelchairs. Also, there must be adequate lighting near the entrance.
  3. Signage – Signs must be clear, concise, and understandable. They should also meet certain criteria like easy-to-read lettering (no script) and ample lighting for nighttime use. Labels or other signs indicating special services or amenities must be placed in an appropriate spot near the door of the building too.
  4. Accessible Toilet and Shower Rooms – There must be enough accessible restrooms for everyone. The toilet stalls must have doors that are wide enough to accommodate wheelchair users. Each stall should also have grab bars, emergency alarms, etc.; there should be nothing blocking access to the toilet or sink.

How Can Businesses Comply with ADA?

Businesses will have to make appropriate improvements, whether it is through renovation or replacing old buildings. Some buildings may not be able to be renovated due to their age. There are several ways businesses can comply with ADA requirements:

  • ADA Checklist – An initial step for any business wanting to improve its facilities is the checklist that must be done by a professional. This checklist covers all the requirements from top to bottom and should be done before any actual construction or renovation. It can take a long time, so it better start early!
  • Professional Consultants – accessiBe offers services that include ADA consultancy and audit to businesses that want to improve their websites’ compliance with ADA regulations.

ADA compliance is a set of regulations businesses must follow to sell products and services to the federal government. By complying with ADA, businesses can ensure their products and services are safe and secure.
